People think the best way to secure a new job is to list every single skill they have ever learned or performed – even if they have only done it once in their entire career!
Unfortunately, this is not a great way to sell yourself as the perfect candidate. An employer is looking for a specific set of skills to solve their problem.
Here are 5 ways to make sure you are selling your skill set to its maximum potential.
1. Market yourself WELL!
Convincing an employer that you are the one they need sounds daunting so it’s easy to just update your LinkedIn profile or CV with skills, achievements and hobbies. Being able to market yourself as a person is much more valuable. You need to communicate what you can offer as an individual not just another page of credentials in a pile.
2. Stay goal focused
Trying to keep yourself focused on what to want to ultimately achieve can be hard. Trying to pursue several avenues all at the same time can skew your focus and take your eyes off the prize. You’ve chosen your end game so make sure all of your efforts are directed towards achieving that – Success will come much sooner.
3. Identify your USPs
You’ve chosen your career path and have all the relevant qualifications and experience to achieve the dream. Now you must identify your unique selling points (USPs) – prove to a prospective employer that you understand their daily struggle and that your USPs provide a clear solution.
4. Are you visible?
Ensure that all of your social media platforms are up to date. LinkedIn is one of the most prolific places for employers to find potential new employees, so an attractive profile is a must. If you have your own website, that’s an even better way to showcase your skills and achievements on a larger scale.
5. Nothing happens overnight
Anyone that has succeeded in a profession has, more than likely, worked hard and long to get there. Consistency, motivation and concentration are key to achieving anything close to success.
So, the lesson here is to find your niche. The more time you spend focused on one area, the better at it you get. Don’t try to be everywhere at once and everything to everyone.
